  • LORRAINE ALI: The playa song here that does work is "Get Your Number," with Jermaine Dupri. It's so over the top--he brags about the "Cris on ice, the Benz." It's like a cartoon, and it's fun. In fact, the only other song I don't like is the ballad "I Wish You Knew." It's so melodramatic, and there's the fake audience in the background. It's cheesy.

MARIAH CAREY: I know, but that was the point--to make it really retro and funny, and I even talk to the audience. We just got carried away.

LA: It doesn't work for me.

MC: Well, there are people who like this kind of thing--something to sing at the karaoke bar on that one night a week they get out and wear that special dress.

LA: So is it safe to say this is your first karaoke-inspired track?

MC: If you must put it that way, OK, fine.

  • "I Wish You Knew" is a song that I wrote with Big Jim Wright. Yet again, we recorded it with a live band and I sang with the band as they were recording it. So as they were laying down their track, they could feel where I was going to go and just the nuances and stuff. It was a really good experience just singing parts to the guitar player or whatever instruments were going on, the keyboards, just having the entire live moment. I added the live audience in there and there's a spoken section and I know that I'm going to do this song live and it's going to be fun because it's giving you old school Diana Ross moments of a live concert where she'd just break down the song and just start talking. I was kind of joking when I did it in the studio, but then my friends were there and they were like, "You should leave that," and I was like, "Alright, whatever." Anyway, it's one of my favorite songs off the new record.
