ABOUT THE SONG
Andy: Haman O wants to know, texted, “I would love it with you collaborated with Cardi B. Will that ever happen?”
Mariah: I would love for that to happen! The song you guys were just playing, “A No No” which was originally Lil Kim’s song. We love Kim. I was hoping that the three of us could do a collaboration, I think that be great. But I mean, if nobody puts it together, it’s not going to happen. So you know, things happen real quick these days, so you never know.

SS: It seems like it’s like a family reunion on this album, ‘cause you’ve got EVERYBODY. It seems like this the Christmas album, because everybody done came together. Now, “A No No,” before you walked in the studio everyone was talking about “A No No,” that’s a favorite in the room.
MC: That’s one of my favorites.
SS: How did that come together? Do you just pick up the phone and say, “Hey, Kim, I need you”?
MC: No, see the thing is Kim is not actually on the song. It’s just, just… We sampled her remix of “Crush On You,” which is one of my favorite favorite records of all time, and then um, we, me and my friend Priscilla Renea, I don’t know if you have heard of her - she’s incredible, she’s got an album called Colored, it’s great, she’s a wonderful artist. Anyway, we wrote the song on top of the beat, and then actually it ended up where Jermaine got involved in it too at the end and changed a couple things around, so it is kinda like a family reunion.
SS: A family reunion, right! You have a knack for being able- I don’t know if it’s your producers, just the collaborations with your producers where you just pick the perfect samples all the time.
MC: You know what it is? I try to go with songs that I, that give me a certain feeling. Like “Crush on You” was just one of those anthems to me, it’s one of those ones that you hear it, it makes you happy. I love Kim and people, fans were doing mash-ups and stuff, and it was just like…
SS: Makes sense.
MC: It puts you in a good mood.
WBLS 107.5 NYC “Mariah Carey Talks New Music, Rebirth of Glitter and Listening to WBLS Throughout The Years” with Shaila Scott, November 20, 2018
During one of Carey and [Priscilla] Renea’s sessions, talk turned to the #MeToo movement. “She’s very animated; she has all these one-liners she’ll always say,” Renea remembers. “We were talking about the different things that are a no-no that have been happening. I don’t even need to say it, but our president is a no-no.” This conversation led directly to “A No No,” which transforms the beat from Lil Kim’s lusty “Crush on You” into a vehicle for a curt rebuke of a “snake in the grass.”

Suss: The whole album is dope and I’ve been playing “Oh No No.”
MC: “A No No.”
Suss “A No No.”
MC: I heard you playing that and I saw the video I was very excited, I was like, “
I’m back in New York, I get to see this video and hear Suss on the radio.”
Suss: It’s such a New York vibe, that record.
MC: It is, ‘cause the original, the Lil Kim Version is one of my all time favorite as you know. Suss, you know all my favorites. You know how to get the mood from me that I need to be in, wherever I’m at, whenever you’re there.
Suss: Yes yes yes.
Suss: So “A No No” is crazy and I heard that, I know it’s not done, I don’t know if it’s actually gonna happen, but you threw it in the air, to possibly have Lil Kim & Cardi B do a collab.
MC: I would love that, I would love that. You know, like I said, the original was one of my favorites.I love Kim, always have. And Cardi’s incredible, she’s doing her thing right now, it’s exciting. I think it would be a very big female empowerment moment.
Suss: Can I do some phone calls and try to make that happen?
MC: I would love that, I would love that.
