ABOUT THE SONG
'Don't Forget About Us' was a song that Jermaine [Dupri] and I started writing and didn't finish, and L.A. Reid heard it. He was excited about it and he was like, 'We should re-release the album,' " Carey recalled. "And I'm happy 'cause I got to do another video, I'm gonna do some more videos, and I got to do some more exciting collaborations, so it's cool and really a thank-you to my fans — that's kind of like a constant theme in my life.
MTV News 11.16.2005 Corey Moss
Well basically it’s a love song, but it’s like a… the last line I say in the chorus, “When it’s for real, it’s forever so don’t forget about us” – and I think that pretty much sums it up for anyone out there who’s been in that kind of situation.
CHUM 104.5 Radio Special with Taylor Kaye
I try not to get too specific so that people can apply the lyrics to their own lives. When I was growing up and listening to the radio and I would hear a song that reminded me of a certain person or a situation or whatever, I would want to be able to completely connect it to that moment. And then if I heard someone explaining it and making it into something totally different, it ruined it for me. So I kind of like to keep it open for people's imaginations. It evokes something different depending on who listens to it and at what time. "Don't Forget About Us" could give you a good, happy memory, or you could be miserable, crying, listening to it over and over. All in all, I think it's good to have music you can live vicariously through, and that's what a lot of people have told me this record has been for them.
2005 MTV News Jennifer Vineyard “Mariah Just Can’t Let Go of Mimi - or her VMA Losses”
“When we decided to re-release The Emancipation of Mimi album, L.A. Reid felt that we needed to have another mid-tempo ballad to go along with the new, special platinum edition. I really love this record because I feel it’s got so many dynamics and it speaks directly to the person I’m writing to. It still allows people to interpret the song their own way and to connect with however they may be feeling they need to talk to when they listen to the song. I feel like that’s what makes it a #1 song. I love the beat, I love the track, I love the musicality of this piece. It’s definitely a personal favorite of mine.”
