ABOUT THE SONG
DJ: You worked with Kanye West, Chicago’s own - what was that like?
MC: That was really cool - we tried to work together on my last project [Charmbracelet], but it didn’t work out. I’ve always admired his work - I started hearing about him from Rockafella and the stuff he did with Jay, so it's been a long time coming and I’m glad we got a chance to work together. I’m so happy for him with all his success - it’s amazing. - Mariah interview on B96 Radio, January 2005
"Stay The Night" is a collaboration between myself and Kanye West. We've wanted to work together for a really long time and I was really glad that it happened for this record. It was one of the first songs that I recorded for The Emancipation of Mimi. It was a track that he had that I just fell in love with when I heard it. We started going back and forth with some ideas, you know, melody stuff. Then I went away and sang it. I didn't realize when we were coming up with the concepts and writing that it was in a really high key. The way I wrote it was a belting out song. When I did it I was like kicking myself like, "Why didn't I think about this?" Then after I finished it, I was happy because it's very much a vocal performance but it's just organic to the song and to the nature of the feeling we were going for. It's kind of giving you an old school Jackson 5-ish type vibe. So I was happy with that. - AOL Music Commentary, April 22, 2005
Q: What was it like working with Kanye West?? “Working with Kanye is something that I’ve really always wanted to do and we’ve tried to get together a few times before this album, but it just didn’t work out until now so it’s really great that we got the opportunity to get together. We did a song called Stay The Night – which is one of the first records I did for the album and a lot of people say it’s their favorite song. It’s got a really strong powerful vocal performance and the track is really hot, so I’m glad we had the chance to work together because I think he’s really really talented. I loved his album this past year, so it was really great to have this opportunity.” Honey B Fly Emancipation of Mimi EPK Video Question
DJ Schooly: Tell us about that track [Stay The Night]. Is that gonna be a single? Could that potentially be a single?
Mariah: I would love it, maybe when, you speak to Kanye, tell him he needs to throw a nice eight bars on there just for me, and gimme eight, you know? Because I think maybe then it'll be able to be a single. But, so many fans come up to me and say "Please put out Stay The Night," somebody actually even made a video, you know the Sims? They made a video from the Sims, um, to "Stay The Night" and sent it to me. I haven't gotten a chance to look at it yet, but yeah, so I've been talking about that too. They're still talking about, like, "Say Somethin'" a lot, but you know, I don't know... I'm conflicted because "Say Somethin'" is about like... a vibe record, and "Stay The Night" is a vibe record but with a real vocal, you know, it's fun, it's a fun song to sing... - Capital FM (UK) with DJ Schooly, December 3, 2005
You know what’s funny? I didn’t even realize what the sample was when Kanye played it for me, and I definitely didn’t know that Emancipation was the title of that at all…. The sample is actually from an older record - Betcha By Golly, Wow - Prince did it second, if that’s the remake, it’s from the 60s or something…. The song is about somebody, a guy, that’s trying to get a girl to stay the night but she’s conflicted - she doesn’t really know what she should do, so the guy keeps telling her to stay the night, and she’s like “I don't know if I should stay the night.” - NRG Radio France Interview, 2005
