Lead The Way

Lead The Way

'Lead The Way’ is kinda like the love theme for Billie and Dice

- Mariah Carey

Written by Mariah Carey & Walter Afanasieff
Produced by Mariah Carey & Walter Afanasieff

3:53     Album Version

  • I actually started writing songs for this album prior to the movie getting greenlit, prior to me even submitting the first treatment. I wrote songs that I actually forgot about because it’s been so long since I came up with the first idea that when I heard them again, I was like, you know, ‘this is perfect,’ and it’s so funny because it really is the essence of the love story between Billie and Dice. There's a song called ‘Lead The Way’ that really makes the love story work and it’s one of the first songs that I wrote for the movie. - Glitter TV Interview 2001

  • MC: 'Lead The Way’ is kinda like the love theme for Billie and Dice. Billie’s thing is she’s very afraid of trusting people because of the fact that her mother - she wasn’t abandoned by her mother, she was taken away from her mother because her mother was an addict and she had to be taken away because something happened to her, and so she grows up in a foster home and she’s got this fear within her. There’s a part of the song that goes, ‘if I move closer, then love will take over and lead the way,’ so it’s like she’s sort of allowing herself to be close to someone for the first time. - Glitter Interview CD
  • Striking a balance between uptempos and her signature, emotional ballads, "Glitter", features remakes of dance-oriented songs from the '80s ("Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" and "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On"), as well as breathtaking slow numbers ("Reflections", "Never Too Far", and "Lead The Way"). "I think people who were fans of 'Vision Of Love' and those types of songs are going to really like these ballads." Mariah says. - Black Beat “Mariah Shines On With ‘Glitter’” August 18, 2001
  • Mariah Carey: To me, Glitter is one of my best albums. A lot of people got confused, not knowing whether it was a soundtrack or an album or what. There's a song called "Lead the Way" which I did on "Ally McBeal," and it's coming out in January. I sang the song on [the show]. It's one of those ballads that basically everybody that's been following my career says reminds them of a "Vision of Love"-type record, and that's one of my favorite songs from the record. It also has fun, uptempo [songs]. The cool thing for me is to be able to tie in "Never Too Far" and "Hero." Having the Greatest Hits coming out, to be able to tie in both those records is almost like a circle. - MTV News “Mariah Carey: Looking Out For #1” 2001
  • “The voice has been here all along. Even if you listen to the oh-so-dissed 'Glitter' (soundtrack), there is a song called 'Lead the Way,' which is one of my best vocal performances ever.” - Billboard ‘Mariah 'Digs Deep' on Upcoming Album' March 31, 2005
