  • RL: One song is titled H.A.T.E.U. Does it mean what it seems to say?

MC: “Oh, it actually means Having A Typical Emotional Upset.”

RL: So it doesn’t really mean “hate” as in H-A-T-E?

MC; “Well, what it is is I can’t wait to hate you and make you feel what I do. I’m looking at it from a female’s point of view. The song is about someone who is sad and lonely; she’s a character in the song. I’m not in that world right now. I’m not feeling that way. It’s a distant memory; it’s a past.”

RL: And how do you cope with what you called “emotional upset”?

MC: “Well, I cry and cry. Then, I’m okay again. Crying has a healing effect.”

  • In the studio still, now we workin on Mariah Carey "Hate U" remix.....SOOOOOOO SICK.....Jump Smokers to the WORLD!!

  • BS: How do you choose the singles? Because, you know the lambs go back and forth about what songs should be the singles. So how do you choose the singles that we hear? Because a lot of people thought that H.A.T.E.U. should be the second single..

MC: And it is now. To me H.A.T.E.U. is more..

    BS: So powerful.

MC: Yeah, and it’s emotional and it’s really from here, and it’s where I feel I’m at musically. And we got a hot remix out right now…

BS: Remix, yes, yes. I heard it actually.

    MC: You did?

BS: With Gucci Mane and Big Boi - I have it on my website, I hope you don’t get mad at me.

    MC: OJ Da Juiceman.

BS: [sings] Boy you should know that…

MC: C’mon, you know you love the original of that, we love that original record, and that was a JD original!

  • The ballad “H.A.T.E.U.,” meanwhile, finds the singer seeing life in the wake of a break-up and longing for the moment when loss and regret transform into a cleansing anger. But the title of the song doesn’t necessarily stand for what you might think. “H.A.T.E.U. is the first song I wrote for the album,” Carey says, “and it stands for Having A Typical Emotional Upset.”

Always a brilliant technical singer with an extraordinary vocal range, Carey rises to new heights on that track. “I sing a recurring melody in the upper register of my voice; it’s not an ad-lib, but an integral part of the song’s hook,” she says. “That’s not something I’ve done before, and when listening back to it, it reminded me of how Minnie Ripperton used her upper register on her hit song ‘Lovin’ You.’ I thought how ironic that her song was called ‘Lovin’ You’ and my song is called, ‘H.A.T.E.U.’ — and both use that upper ‘whistle register’ as a major part of the melody. So it’s sort of an homage to Minnie Ripperton, a tribute to her since she has been so influential in my singing style.”
